While upon my quest to relinquish perfectionism, I decided to give pastels a go. These thick and chunky wax-like sticks make it really hard to nit-pick tiny details. I wanted to take it a step further and try a more abstract/expressionist approach – which is not like me, as I’ve always avoided it, calling it “not real art” because it doesn’t require high technical skills. Turns out I was just trying to justify my own insecurity around expressing myself and making myself vulnerable to such criticisms. Now that I’ve tried it, and spent more time creating less “perfect” or detailed or planned art, and just creating what comes through without needing it to meet a certain visual or technical standard, I’m starting to think that the expressionists had it right all along. The process is the whole point.
